Haven’t we ALWAYS purchased vehicles based on having a whole lotta body? Why do we hate on crossovers so much? They have similar ingress and egress, performance, ability to handle diverse road conditions, and a general sense of safety while providing the complete opposite! As I see it, everyone is buying the same vehicles they have always purchased. On top of that, we aspire to own cars that are the opposite because we always want what we don’t have and need to exaggerate everything we do.

Side note, part of me still thinks late 40s Mercury design is where we are headed. For real this time though, not just the usual 2 or 6 “design studies” that pop up every year.

You are correct, it’s the same as before, car marketing people have just figured out what makes people tick. It’s a combination of the things people want in family cars. Shame it has been responsible for some dreadful lineup bloat though.

As for heading towards 40s Mercury styling. Cars of today have the same curves, aggresive fascias and high beltlines with no visibility. They sit a lot higher now though. Running boards, rear wheel covers and chrome are not making a comeback any time soon though. So I see what you mean, but it’s only sort-of happening.

Harley Earl brought in the wide and low design but it was an uphill battle. Americans have always and will always want “crossovers”
